AI SRE for Prometheus and Grafana
Turn Prometheus and Grafana alerts into a draft root cause analysis in minutes. The Sherlocks AI Watson agent reads your Prometheus, Grafana and Loki setup read-only, tests hypotheses against the data, and posts the root cause in Slack with a confidence level and the evidence attached.

What Sherlocks AI does with Prometheus and Grafana
Sherlocks AI uses Prometheus, Grafana and Loki as signal sources for incident investigation. When an alert lands in Slack, 16+ AI agents correlate metrics, logs and traces across time and services, test hypotheses against the data, and deliver a draft root cause analysis in your incident channel.
The exporters you already run, such as node_exporter, kube-state-metrics, cAdvisor, blackbox and your own application metrics, are all evidence Watson can reason over. Nothing to re-instrument, and no duplicate metrics pipeline.
Why Prometheus alerts still take an hour to explain
Prometheus is very good at telling you that a number crossed a line. The alert carries the metric, the labels and the threshold. It does not carry the reason, and the reason is usually in a different series: the deploy annotation on another dashboard, the node the pod landed on, the dependency whose latency moved two minutes earlier.
So the on-call engineer writes PromQL under pressure. They open the dashboard, widen the time range, guess at the next query, and rule things out one panel at a time. Every obvious first guess has to be checked by hand before the real one is found.
That checking is the part Sherlocks AI takes over. It generates hypotheses about the root cause, tests them against your metrics, logs and traces, and ranks them by likelihood and impact, so the engineer verifies the reasoning instead of redoing it.
Common Prometheus and Grafana incidents, with real investigations
(06 Groups)The incident types Prometheus and Grafana alert on most. Each group sits next to published investigations that were opened from a Prometheus or Grafana alert, with the RCA guide and upstream documentation for each.
Latency and performance
- SLO burn from recording rules
- p99 breach (histogram_quantile)
- Downstream service timeouts
- Error rate above threshold
A latency alert names the service that is slow, not the reason. In the published case here, a user-service returning 503s traced back through an exhausted connection pool to a missing index left behind by a schema migration.
Infrastructure and resource
- Node CPU, memory or disk pressure
- OOMKilled (kube-state-metrics)
- Container restart loops
- Disk I/O saturation
- Network throughput anomalies
node_exporter tells you a host is out of memory or disk. The cause is often hours or days old. Here, a host memory alert led to a Hibernate session cache leak in a nightly batch job, and a full disk led to an Ansible refactor that silently dropped the logrotate config.
Kubernetes-specific
- Rollouts stuck or degraded
- HPA failing to scale
- PVC in Pending
- Scrape targets down (up == 0)
- Kubelet pressure conditions
Grafana alerts on a cluster often point at the wrong layer. One Trino alert here read like a bad image pull, and the pulls had succeeded: the pods were crash-looping from cluster-wide resource pressure. A ClickHouse Keeper pod failed on one node while its two peers kept running.
Application errors
- Error rate surges by method or path
- 5xx spikes on a service
- Custom metrics breaching their SLO
- Queue depth growing unbounded
Queue and worker alerts rarely have one cause. A Kafka consumer fell 35.9K messages behind because rollout churn, CPU throttling and an HPA hard cap combined, and a Celery worker ran short of memory while an Aurora load surge grew its backlog.
Prometheus itself
- TSDB compaction failing
- High-cardinality labels
- Rule evaluation falling behind
- Remote write backlog
Sometimes the incident is the monitoring. A Prometheus PVC filled up because TSDB blocks grew with metric cardinality under a 65-day retention window. The pod itself was healthy, so the volume alert was the first sign of trouble.
Grafana-surfaced
- Panel anomaly before any alert fires
- Correlated spikes across panels
- Deploy annotations lining up with a regression
Grafana is often where an incident is first seen, and the alert text is not always right. Trino pods crashed on startup because the BigQuery connector needed a JVM argument missing from the config, while the image pull half of the Grafana alert was a false positive.
How Sherlocks AI works with Prometheus and Grafana
(04 Steps)- 1Step 1: Connect Prometheus, Grafana and Loki.
Add them as integrations alongside the rest of your stack. All permissions are read-only.
- 2Step 2: Install the Slack app.
Sherlocks AI monitors your Slack workspace for incident conversations, questions and alerts, so the Alertmanager and Grafana alerts your team already sends to Slack are where an investigation starts.
- 3Step 3: An alert fires.
An investigation is triggered manually, by the alert, or proactively. The Watson agent reads metrics from Prometheus and the other connected tools, then Sherlocks AI generates hypotheses, tests them against the data, and ranks causes by likelihood and impact.
- 4Step 4: The RCA lands in Slack.
The primary root cause with a confidence level, contributing factors, a timeline, recommended remediation, and links to the relevant logs, metrics, commits and dashboards. Engineers ask follow-up questions in the same thread.

Security and data handling
All permissions are read-only. Sherlocks AI cannot modify your infrastructure, so it cannot change your Prometheus rules, your Grafana dashboards or your alert routing.
Sherlocks AI collects only metadata and metrics: never raw application data, PII or secrets.
Watson runs inside your network. Only aggregated metrics and metadata are sent to the Sherlocks AI platform, or nothing at all with the self-hosted deployment.
Sherlocks AI cloud environment is annually audited against the SOC 2 Type 2 framework.
A real investigation, step by step
This is a published case from the examples section, not a mock-up. A Prometheus Node Exporter alert said host memory was above 95%, and the obvious first guesses were wrong. Here is how the investigation got from the alert to the code.
- 1The alertCriticalPrometheus Node Exporter + Grafana2026-03-28 03:14 IST
Host memory usage exceeded 95% on prod-vm-03
14.2 GBJVM Heap8 minDowntime1,247Failed Txns - 24 hypotheses ruled out
Traffic spike drove the heap up
Heap growth is monotonic from 21:00 and is not correlated with any request pattern. prod-vm-01/02 carry the same API traffic and sit at 62% / 58%.
Infrastructure fault or noisy neighbor on prod-vm-03
dmesg shows a clean OOM kill of PID 2847 (java) with anon-rss 14.2 GB, accounting for nearly all of the 15 GiB host. No hardware fault.
-Xmx8g heap is just sized too small for the workload
The heap blew past -Xmx8g (8.9 GB by 01:00, incl. off-heap) and kept climbing to 14.2 GB. The growth is unbounded, so a bigger heap would only delay the OOM. Sizing is contributing, not the cause. Ruled out as root.
An application thread-local cache is unbounded
No significant thread-local retention was found; the retention is rooted in the Hibernate session.
- 3Root cause
Batch reconciliation job loads 4.2M rows in one session without clear()
The nightly job runs findAll() over 4.2M PaymentTransaction rows in a single Hibernate session and never calls flush()/clear(), so the L1 cache pins every entity for the full 6h12m loop. The scope was changed 2 weeks ago from a 30-day window (~200K rows) to findAll(), a ~20x jump that turned a latent pattern into an OOM.
- 4The fix
- Add entityManager.flush() and entityManager.clear() every 500 records in the batch reconciliation loop.
- Revert to the 30-day date filter or implement pagination (Pageable) to limit loaded entities per iteration.
For the general method, read how to debug a JVM memory leak and OOM kill, or browse every published investigation.
Why Sherlocks AI on top of Prometheus and Grafana
Prometheus, Grafana and Loki connect as integrations. Nothing to re-instrument and no move of your metrics pipeline to a SaaS.
Dashboards require you to know what to look for and where. Sherlocks AI correlates signals across your stack, identifies anomalies, and explains causation.
Sherlocks AI generates hypotheses about the root cause, tests them against the available data, and ranks them by likelihood and impact, so the engineer verifies the reasoning instead of redoing it.
Every root cause comes with a confidence level, and every claim cites the logs, metrics or commits it rests on.
Frequently asked questions
(07 Questions)Can Sherlocks AI investigate Prometheus and Grafana alerts?
Yes. Ten of the investigations published on this site started from a Prometheus, Node Exporter, JMX exporter or Grafana alert, including a host memory alert traced to a Hibernate cache leak and a Prometheus volume alert traced to metric cardinality. Each one is worked from the alert to a root cause, with the hypotheses that were ruled out.
Does Sherlocks AI need write access to Prometheus or Grafana?
No. All permissions are read-only. Sherlocks AI cannot modify your infrastructure, databases or application data.
How does an alert become an investigation?
Sherlocks AI monitors your Slack workspace for incident conversations, questions and alerts. An investigation can be triggered manually, by an alert, or proactively. During it, the Watson agent reads metrics from Prometheus and the other connected tools, generates hypotheses about the root cause, tests them against the data, and ranks them by likelihood and impact.
What does the root cause analysis include?
The primary root cause with a confidence level, contributing factors, a timeline of events, the affected services, recommended remediation steps, and links to the relevant logs, metrics, commits and dashboards. It is delivered in Slack, where engineers can ask follow-up questions.
Do my raw metrics leave my network?
Sherlocks AI collects only metadata and metrics, never raw application data, PII or secrets. Only aggregated metrics and metadata are sent to the Sherlocks AI platform, and with the self-hosted deployment nothing leaves your environment.
Does it replace Grafana dashboards?
No. Dashboards show you data; Sherlocks AI tells you what it means. Dashboards require you to know what to look for and where. Sherlocks AI correlates signals across your stack, identifies anomalies, and explains causation, and links back to the relevant dashboards.
How do I know whether to trust a root cause?
Every root cause comes with a confidence level, and every claim cites its source: the logs, metrics or commits it rests on. The published investigations also show the hypotheses that were checked and ruled out.
